A new APP on the “Frogs of Southern Africa” is out and available for IOS ($12.99) and android ($17.99) smart phones and tablets. This APP packed with information including 61 high resolution videos and 150 frogs calls. The APP acts as a full field guide and can be searched by English, Afrikaans, and scientific names. The APP has many features, but four that stand out in particular are:
- My location feature. With the “my location” switched on the APP will zoom in and provides a list of species for the specific location. However if you are sitting elsewhere you could tap on a location and study the frogs for that site.
- The “My list” allows a researcher to create a species list for an area or a specific project. This list with GPS coordinates can then be emailed from within the APP.
- The compare function allows one to compare two species side by side.
- With the March 2016 free update a “citizen science” component will be added whereby userd will be able to upload pictures with their own identification to a central database. They will then receive a confirmation of the ID.
