I just started working with Jackson's chameleons at home about a week ago. When I received the pair, they both appeared to be in great health. However, last night I noticed that the male had received some sort of injury on his left hind foot. It had obviously become infected in a very short time. The entire leg was swollen to about three times the normal size. I immediately noticed a necrotic odor and, when I began cleaning the wound, I noticed maggots. I got him to my vet as soon as I could, but, unfortunately, he didn't make it. I have been keeping the pair in separate arboreal mesh cages outdoors. The enclosures are set up with a drip system and plenty of foliage as well as basking areas. Has anyone seen this condition before? Do you have any ideas about how I can prevent this from happening in the future? Thank you.
